let A be the starting point

now the boy covers 4m towards north

take the point to be B

AB = 4m

now he goes 3m towards east

take the point to be C

BC = 3m

now the displacement will be AC (shortest path)

so by pythagoras theorem(triangle will be right angled)

AC=√(AB)^2 +(BC)^2 m

=√(4)^2 + (3)^2 m

=√16+9 m

=√25 m

= 5 m

answer is 5 m
