A boy leaves for school at 10:40 a.m. He spends 5 hrs in school and comes back at 5:20 pm on the same day. He travels at a constant speed of 1.4 km/hr. How far away is his school?

(I tried to use 1.4kmph as average speed and thus got total distance as 2.3 km but I think that answer is wrong)

Answer: boy leaves for school at 10:40 a. m. spends 5 hours and comes back at 5:20 p. m.

so the total time he was out is 6 hours and 40 minutes that is 6*60 minutes = 360 min + 40 min = 400 minutes and

5*60 minutes spent in school =300 min

so time he traveled is 100 minutes

traveling time in seconds is 100 * 60 = 6000

now speed in m/s is 1.4 * 5/18 = 0.38 m/s

speed = distance / time

0.38*6000 = distance = 2280 meters

that is 2.28 km

Answer:

1.165 km

Step-by-step explanation:

10:40 to 5:20 is 6 hour 40 minut time.

5 hour spend at school.

total time for travel is 1 hour 40 minit(100 minit)

speed 1.4 km/hr. (0.0233km/minit)

speed =distance/time

distance =speed×time

=0.0233×100

=2.333 km

now he travels 2 times for go to school and come back to home

so home to school distance=2.333/2=1.1665 km
