distance he travelled = 24+7 = 31m
displacement is the shortest distance
when we draw diagram we get a triangle(right angled) and the hypotenuse will be the displacement. so, by pythagoras theorem
so hyp² = 24² + 7²
   hyp = √576+49
   hyp = √625
   hyp = 25
so the displacement = 25m

24m towards south= -24j 7m east = 7i displacement=7i-24j distance= √(7)²+(-24)² =√49+576 =√625 =25m or displacement=25(i-j)m

Anonymous: Sorry distance=24+7=31m
