Given info : A boy of mass 45 kg, runs with a velocity of 5 m/s and jumps onto a skateboard and cruises at a velocity of 4.5 m/s on a level road.

To find : the mass of the skateboard is ...

solution : mass of boy, m₁ = 45 kg

velocity of boy, v₁ = 5 m/s

velocity of system of boy and skateboard, v₂ = 4.5 m/s

now using law of conservation of linear momentum,

initial linear momentum = final linear momentum

⇒ m₁v₁ = (m₁ + m₂)v₂

⇒ 45 kg × 5 m/s = (45 kg + m₂)4.5 m/s

⇒ 50 kg  = 45 kg + m₂

⇒ m₂ = 5 kg

therefore the mass of the skateboard is 5 kg.
