A boy of mass 60 kg is standing stationary with respect to a treadmill accelerating at 2 m s. Find the net force
on the boy. Also, if the coefficient of static friction between the boy's sneakers and the treadmill is 0.3, up to
what acceleration of the treadmill can the boy be stationary with respect to the treadmill?

Answer:

When man is stationary w.r.t. conveyor belt, his net acceleration = acceleration of conveyor =1m/s

2

Hence, net force by newton's second law =ma=65×1m/s

2

=65N

This net force is provided by the friction between the conveyor belt and the man.

Maximum static friction =μN

Beyond this, man will move relative to the belt as per psuedo force.

At max static friction μN=ma

=μg=0.2×10=2m/s
