LET TOTAL NO OF PAGES BE X
ON 1ST DAY HE READS =X/4
REMAINING PAGES = 3X/4
ON 2ND DAY HE READS = X/4
TOTAL PORTION READ = 2X/4=X/2
THEN X-X/2=100
OR X=200

Given : a boy reads 1/4 of a book on the first day.

on the second day he reads 1/3 of the remaining portion.

100 pages are left to be read

To Find   what portion of the book does the boy read in the two days? find how many pages are there in the book?

Solution:

Let say total Pages in Book  = 4B

boy reads 1/4 of a book on the first day

=> Read on 1st day = (1/4)4B = B

Remaining Pages  = 4B - B = 3B

second day he reads 1/3 of the remaining portion.

=> Read on 2nd Day  =  (1/3)3B = B

Remaining Pages  = 3B - B = 2B

Boys read in two days = 2B/4B  = 1/2

Half Portion

2B = 100

=> B = 50

=> 4B  = 200

There are 200 Pages in Book
