Answer:

Explanation:

Average speed= total distance /total time taken=

(1000+ 500) / (45x60)  m/s =

1500/2700 m/sec = 0.55 m/sec

Average velocity = total displacement /total time =

500/2700 m/sec

= 0.185 m/sec

The average speed of 2 km/hr and average velocity is 0.6 km/hr

GIVEN

A boy runs from his home to the market 1km away. He reaches the market in 30 minutes . Seeing the market closed he at one's runs back to his home and stops after 15 minutes at his friend's house which is 1/2km away from the market.

TO FIND

His average velocity and average speed.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

It is given,

Distance from home to market = 1 km = 1km

Time taken to reach the market = 30min = 1/2 hour

Distance of friend's house from market = 1/2 km

Time taken to reach = 15 min = 1/4 hour

Average speed = Total distance/total time

=

 =  \frac{1 +  \frac{1}{2} }{ \frac{1}{2} +  \frac{1}{4}  }  =  \frac{ \frac{3}{2} }{ \frac{3}{4} }  =  \frac{3 \times 4}{2 \times 3}

= 2km/hr

We know that,

Average velocity = Total displacement/Total time

 =   \frac{ \frac{1}{2} }{ \frac{3}{4} }  =  \frac{1 \times 4}{2 \times 3}

= 0.6 km/hr

Hence, The average speed of 2 km/hr and average velocity is 0.6 km/hr
