Now, displacement is a vector quantity. Hence, we have to consider the directions. Here, the boy has travelled a total of 3+3 = 6m to the east and

5+3 = 8m to the north. Displacement will be in the direction of the straight line joining initial and final points, hence here it will be the hypotenuse formed by these two distances ( 6m and 8m ). The magnitude of displacement will be, as per Pythagoras theorem, equal to \sqrt{}6^{2}+8^{2} = 10m
