AnsweR:

Given:

  • The boy travels 10 metres south
  • And then travels 12 metre East

To Find:

  • Total distance travelled
  • Displacement from initial position

Solution:

Refer to the attached photo for the diagram.

The total distance travelled by the boy will be:

➜10 metres South + 12 metres East

➜22 metres

The displacement displacement from the initial position will be:

➜Distance AB

To find the distance AB, we have to use Pythagoras theorem.

➜ AO² + OB² = AB²

➜ 10² + 12² = AB²

➜ 100 + 144 = AB²

➜ 244 = AB²

➜ AB = 15.62 metres

✓ What is Distance?

Distance is the total distance travelled by a body.

What is displacement?

It is the shortest distance between the initial position and the final position of the body.

distance =10+12=22m

displacement=√10^2+12^2

=15.62 m
