So looking at the diagram we can see that a right angled triangle is formed with sides 9,12 (15-3=12)

In right angled triangle $a^{2}+b^{2} =c^{2}$

so $9^{2} + 12^{2} = x^{2}$

=81+144= x^2

= 225=x^2

= x= $\sqrt{225}$

x= 15
