A boy travels 15 km due north, then goes 9 km due east, then 3km due south. How far is he from his starting point?

In diagram red= initial position, black= travel, blue= displacement

So looking at the diagram we can see that a right angled triangle is formed with sides 9,12 (15-3=12)

In right angled triangle a^{2}+b^{2} =c^{2}

so 9^{2} + 12^{2} = x^{2}

=81+144= x^2

= 225=x^2

= x= \sqrt{225}

x= 15

the boy is 15 km away from initial position
