Given: A boy walks from his home to school at a distance of half km in 15 min. He then returns to his home in time 20 mins.

To find: His average speed

Explanation: Total distance= distance from home to school + distance from school to home

= 0.5 km+ 0.5 km

= 1 km

= 1000 m

(since 1 km = 1000 m)

Time taken from home to school

= 15 mins

= 15*60 seconds( since 1 min= 60 seconds)

= 900 seconds

Time taken from school to home

= 20 mins

= 20 *60 seconds( since 1 min= 60 seconds)

= 1200 seconds

Total time= 900+1200 seconds

= 2100 seconds

Average speed

= Total distance/ Total time

= 1000 m / 2100 seconds

= 0.476 m/s

Therefore, the average speed of the journey is 0.476 m/s.
