a brass rod is 185 cm long and 1.60 cm in diameter. What force must be applied to each end of the rod to prevent it from contracting when it is cooled from 120 degree celsius to 10 degree celsius?

σ = E*λ*ΔT = 10^5 N/mm^2*1.9*10^5 °C^-1*110 °C = 209 N/mm^2
F = σ*A/2 = 0.7854*16^2/2*209/1000 = 21 kN
