A monument to commemorate the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela was raised in Howick, South Africa in 2012.

Designed by Marco Cianfanelli, the sculpture is a portrait of Mandela with lengthy vertical bars which symbolize his imprisonment.

Moreover, upon walking through it, the structure shines with light radiations representing, in words of the designer, the solidarity and political uprising of the people against the apartheid government.

The sculpture comprises of fifty charcoal coloured steel columns and the path leading to them is planted with trees with words statesman, comrade, courageous, negotiator, prisoner, character, and leader on them.
