Generally any substance expands when heated and contracts when cooled Similarly water also contracts when it is cooled This continues till it reaches the temperature of 4 degree Celsius When the temperature of the water falls below 4 degree Celsius the water expands instead of contracting This is known as Anamalous Expansion of Water The water at 4 degree c expands when it is both heated or cooled This shows that volume of water is minimum at 4 degree Celsius Therefore the density of water is maximum at 4 degree Celsius.

Anomalous expansion of water is anabnormal property of water whereby it expands instead of contracting when the temperature goes from 4°C to 0°C, and it becomes less dense. Normally, liquids contract on cooling & the density increases. However, water is special.
