When a seed is cut into two we can see a large number of structures.

Explanation:

  • The seed coat is the protective covering of the seed. It contains the plemule.Plumule is a future shoot. This is the part of the seed which will grow to the 'future shoot and bearing' the first true leaves of the plant.
  • The 'plumule' is the conical in shape and without leaf structure. The growth of the 'plumule' does not happen if the cotyledons do not grow above the ground.
  • Plumule grows upward to form the shooting part of the plant and the radical goes to the down to form the roots of the plants.
  • Some seed depend on the endosperm for the nutrition is known as endospermic seed where is dose depend on other parts of the seed is known as non endospermic seed.
  • In most of the dicot and many monocot plants the Reserve food for the germination of the seed is stored in the endosperm of the seed.
  • The endosperm is required for the the maintenance of the dormancy of the seed. However in other seeds to where the endosperm is absent these are dependent on others structures of the seed coat . these are known as non endospermic seed.
