A brown mouse lived under a hedge in the countryside.
One day his cousin from the town came to visit him.
"I thought I'd try out life in the countryside," said
the town mouse
"Oh! you will love it here," replied the brown
country mouse. He did everything he could to look
after his town cousin. He gave him the best piece of
grass to sleep on, the tastiest nuts and vegetables to
eat. The town mouse found the food
horrible and life boring. "Come with
me to the town. We can have some fun
there," he said to the brown country
mouse.
So off they went. They entered a large
town house, scrambling under the back
door. The town mouse led the way up
the stairs, to the dining room... and up
the dining room... and up the dining
table. Food was spread out like a
feast for a king. The country mouse could not
believe his eyes. "I've never seen so much
food!," he squeaked.
Whilst they were nibbling away, the door opened
and in came a man. The two mice hid behind
some Swiss cheese. The man came closer, peered
in the fruit bowl, took an apple and left. "All
clear," said the town mouse.
The country mouse, however, was too scared to eat more.
In the corner, a large cat had woken up by all the noise.
She padded across to the table and spied the two mice.
She pounced on the mice. The country mouse squealed.
"Follow me!" cried the town mouse and they both dived into a mouse hole.
