A brown substance ‘X’ on heating in air forms a black coloured substance ‘Y’ . When

hydrogen gas is passed over heated ‘Y’ it changes back to ‘X’ .

(a) Name the substances X and Y

(b) Name the chemical processes that takes place during both the changes.

(c) Write the chemical equations involved in both the reactions.

Answer:

The brown substance ′X′is copper that is Cu when it is heated copper oxide is formed. Hence compound ′Y′ is copper oxide. This brown substance is copper as it is brown in colour and on passing oxygen in presence of heat, it forms copper oxide which on reacting with hydrogen again forms copper.
