Let us suppose that there is an air bubble inside water. Hence it is rarer medium and the water is denser medium.
We know that when light travels from denser to rarer medium, it undergoes refraction and bends away from the normal. We also know that critical angle is that angle of incidence for which the refracted angle is 900.
Now, when a ray of light whose angle of incidence is > 900 strikes the air bubble surface, it gets reflected back into the water instead of getting refracted.
This process takes place for different light rays striking the bubble at different angles , all greater than 900. As a result of this reflection from different sides, the air bubble often shines somewhat in a similar manner as a mirror shines when light falls on it.
