Iron is a metal and plastic is a non metal object.

Rust is created in the presence of Oxygen and water . Although it still contains iron which is a metal, it is converted to an oxide and therefore is no longer a metal. This would be similar to sodium which also a metal combining with chlorine to create salt which is a non metal.
