Relative humidity is a percentage that is the quotient of two other percentages. It is the percentage of water vapor actually in the air divided by the maximum percentage of water vapor that the air can hold at that temperature. Thus, when there is no water vapor in the air, it is at 0% relative humidity. When the air is holding all it can at its temperature, it is at 100%.
Warmer air can hold more water vapor than colder air. That is why, in cold weather, when we heat up air inside our homes, it feels dry even though there is no difference in the actual amount of water in the heated air. But at its lower relative humidity our bodies are evaporating more water and we feel uncomfortably dry. We often add extra water vapor through a humidifier.
