Given : From a rifle of mass 20kg, a bullet of mass 10g is fired with an initial velocity of 100m/s.

To Find : What is the  initial velocity of recoil of the rifle ?

Solution:

Apply  conservation of momentum

initial Momentum = (20kg + 10g) * 0  = 0 kgm/s

, a bullet of mass 10g  is fired with an initial velocity of 100m/s.

=> mv =  (10/1000) 100  = 1  kgm/s

a rifle of mass 20kg  initial velocity of recoil of the rifle = v

=> -20v   ( as recoil velocity is backward velocity hence -ve sign will be there)

0  = 1  - 20v

=> 20v =  1

=> v = 1/20 m/s

=> v = 0.05 m/s

 the  initial velocity of recoil of the rifle   =   0.05  m/s
