A bullet of 50g was fired from a gun of mass 4kg with initial velocity 35ms-1 calculate initial backward force acting on the gun?

Momentum of bullet=m×v

=(50÷1000)*35

=0.05*35

=1.75 kg m/s

Momentum of rifle=m×v

Let the recoil velocity be 'v' m/s

Hence, momentum of rifle=4×v

According to law of conservation of momentum:

Momentum of bullet=momentum of rifle

1.75=4*v

v=1.75÷4

v=0.4375 m/s

Recoil velocity is=0.4375 m/s

If the time is given, we can find the initial backward force by multiplying mass of gun with the above calculated recoil velocity and dividing by time.
