Given :

Mass of bullet = 10g = 0.01kg

Mass of rifle = 5kg

Velocity of bullet = 250m/s

To Find :

Recoil velocity of rifle.

Solution :

❖ Since no net force acts on the system, linear momentum is conserved.

  • We know that momentum is defined as the product of mass and it's velocity.
  • It is a vector quantity having both magnitude as well as direction.
  • SI unit : N s

Initial momentum of system will be zero as both were at rest position.

Recoil velocity of a gun is given by

  • V = -mv / M

Where M is the mass of the gun, m the mass of bullet and v is the velocity of the velocity of the bullet.

By substituting the given values;

➙ V = - (0.01 × 250) / 5

➙ V = -2.5/5

➙ V = -1/2

V = -0.5 m/s

[Negative sign shows opposite direction.]
