Given that,

  • Mass of the bullet (M1) = 10 g
  • Velocity of the bullet (V1) = 60 m/s
  • Mass of the pistol (M2)= 1.2 kg {convert kg to g} we get 1.2 kg = 1200 grams.
  • Recoil velocity of the pistol = ? (V2)

According to the law of conversion of momentum,

         {∵ M1×V1 = M2×V2}

By substituting the value in the formula we get,

⇒ 10g×60m/s = 1200g×M2

⇒ 10g×60m/s/1200g = M2

⇒ 1/2m/s = M2 {Convert m into cm. 1m = 100cm}

⇒ 1/2×100cm/s  = M2

⇒ 50 cm/s = M2

∴ The recoil velocity of the pistol is 50 cm/s.

Hope this helps you.
