A bullet of mass 10 gram travelling horizontally with a velocity of 150 metre per second strikes a stationary wooden stationary wooden block of mass 5 kg then they both move off together in the same straight line calculate the total Momentum just before the impact and just after the impact also calculate the velocity of the combine object

Answer

momentum before the impact=1.67kgm/s

momentum after the impact=1.67Kgm/s

velocity of combined object=0.33m/s

Step-by-step explanation

mass of bullet=10g=0.001kg=m1

mass of wooden block=5kg=m2

velocity of the bullet=150m/s=v1

since the wooden block is stationary,

velocity of the wooden block=0m/s=v2

after collision,they move together,

mass of the system=m1+m2

let the velocity after collision=v

Finding momentum before and after the collision,

momentum before collision=momentum of the bullet+mentum of the block

=0.001×150+5×0

=5/3+0

=1.67kg

momentum after collision =total mass ×velocity after collision

=(m1+m2)×v

=5.001v

since momentum is conserved,

total momentum before collision=total momentum after collision

1.67=5.001v

v=0.33m/s

Therefore, momentum before collision=momentum after collision

momentum after the collision=1.67Kgm/s

velocity of combined object=0.33m/s
