AnswEr :

  • The recoil velocity of gun is -0.5 m/s

Given :

Mass of bullet = 100 g = 0.1 kg

Mass of gun = 20 kg

Velocity = 100 m/s

To Find :

Recoil velocity of the gun = ?

Concept Used :

To calculate the recoil velocity of gun we need to know the concept of conservation of momentum!!

  • Conservation of Momentum = Mass × Velocity

Solution :

Hence we conclude that,

Momentum(before gun was supposed to be fired) = Momentum of gun + Momentum of bullet

Let us assume the recoil velocity of gun as v m/s !!

By applying law of conservation of momentum,

★ Conservation of Momentum = Mass × Velocity

20 + 0.1 kg × 0= 20 × v + 0.1 ×100

0 = 20v+ 10

0 - 10 = 20v

v = -10/20

v = -0.5 m/s

\therefore The velocity of recoil is -0.5 m/s.

Here, the minus sign indicates that the gun recoils in the opposite direction to the direction that of the bullet!!

More to know :

Recoil velocity is the backward velocity .

It is experienced by a shooter when he shoots a bullet.

Hence, it is the result of conservation of momentum .
