A bullet of mass 16 g is fired from a gun 16 kg with velocity 418 m/s. Find the recoil velocity of gun.

From conservation of momentum

v = -m1u1 / m2
= -(16 × 10^-3 kg × 418 m/s) / (16 kg)
= -0.418 m/s
(-ve sign indicates that velocity of gun is in the direction opposite to that of bullet.)

∴ Recoil velocity of gun is 0.418 m/s (= 41.8 cm/s).
