A bullet of mass 20 gram is fired horizontally with a velocity of 150 {ms} {-1}150ms−1 From a pistol of mass 2kg what is a recoil velocity of pistol?

\huge\underline\bold\blue{given} </p><p>

Mass of the bullet, m = 20 g = 0.02 kg

Velocity of bullet, v = 150 {ms} {-1}

Mass of the gun ,M = 2 kg

\huge\underline\bold\red{to \ find}

Velocity of gun , V = ?

\huge\underline\bold\orange{solution} </p><p>

Before firing, both the gun and bullet are at rest. Therefore, initial momentum (bullet+gun)=0 after firing, final momentum (bullet+gun)= mv + MV

Using the law of conservation of linear momentum,

mv+MV=0

⟹0.02×150+2×V=0

⟹3.0+2V=0

⟹2V=−3

⟹V= −3/2=−1.5ms ^−1

⟹V=−1.5ms^ −1

=>the negative sign shows that the direction of motion of the gun is opposite to the direction of motion of the bullet.
