Answer:

Given,

Mass of Bullet (m) = 200 g

= 0.2 kg

Initial Velocity (u) = 20 m/s

Final Velocity (v) = 0 m/s

Distance travelled by penetration (S) = 40 cm

= 0.4 m

v² = u²-2aS

= 0 = (20)² - (2*a*0.4)

= 0 = 400 - 0.8a

= 0.8a = 400

= a = 500 m/s²

The Retardation caused is 500 m/s²,

Retarding/Resistive Force = ma

= 0.2*500

= 100 N

I hope this helps.
