A bullet of mass 20g i horizontally fired with a velocity 150 ms ^-1 from a pistol of mass 2kg. What is recoll velocity of the pistol.

their is no external force on the system (bullet +pistol) so the momentum remains conserved
m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2
here both bullet and pistol were at rest initially
so initial momentum(m1u1 +m2u2) =0
so m1v1+m2v2=0_____(1)
m1=mass of bullet =20g=0.02kg
m2=mass of pistol=2kg
v1=final velocity of bullet =150m/s
v2=final velocity of pistol
so substituting in formula
we get
v2= -m1v1/m2
= -0.02 ×150/2 = -1.5m/s
