A bullet of mass 20g is fired from a gun of 5kg with a speed of 200m/s. Calculate the recoil velocity of the gun.​

Mass of gun(m2) = 5kg

Final Velocity of bullet(v1) is 200m/s

Let final velocity of gun be v2 m/s

initially both gun and bullet are at rest so u1 and u2 are 0

Using law of conservation of linear momentum

m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2

we get

0 = 0.02 × 200 + 5 × v2

==> v2 = - 4/5 = - 0.8 m/s
