A bullet of mass 20g is fired horizontally with a velocity of 150 m/s from a pistol of mass 2
kg. Find the recoil velocity of the pistol.​

Answer:

According to the Law of Conservation of Momentum,

mu + MU = mv + MV

(0.02)(0) + (2)(0) = (0.02)(150) + (2)(V)

0 + 0 = 3 + 2V

-3/2 = V

V = -1.5 m/s

Therefore, the recoil velocity of the pistol will be 1.5 m/s in the opposite direction.(As the sign is negative)
