Given :  A bullet of mass 30 g is fired from a gun of mass 5 kg ,

with a velocity of 200 m/s ,

To Find : the recoil velocity of gun is

Solution:

mass of gun  = 5 kg

Mass of bullet = 30 g  = 0.03 kg

Initial Velocity of gun and bullet  = 0

Hence Initial Momentum

= 5 * 0 + 0.03 * 0

= 0

After Bullet is fired

Velocity of bullet  =  200 m/s

Recoil velocity of gun = v m/s

( recoil velocity is backward velocity )

Hence Velocity in direction of bullet will be -v

Final momentum

= 5 * (-v) +  0.03 * 200

= -5v  +  6

Conservation of linear momentum

-5v + 6 = 0

=> v = 6/5

=> v = 1.2

recoil velocity of gun is 1.2 m/s
