A bullet of mass 30g is fired horizontaly with a velocity of 120 m/sec from a pistol of mass 2 Kg. Determine the

recoil velocity of the pistol.​

  • Let recoil velocity of gun be V
  • Mass of bullet(m) = 30 g
  • Velocity of bullet(v) = 120m/s
  • Momentum of bullet = m*v = 30*120 gm/s = 3600 m/s
  • Mass of gun(M) = 2 kg = 2000 g
  • According to law of conservation of momentum,
  • m*v = -M*V
  • =>V = (m*v)/-M
  • =>V = -3600/2000
  • =>V = -1.8 m/s
