Answer:

A bullet of mass 60g fired from a 5kg gun with a speed of 500m/s.

The recoil velocity of the gun = 60 m/s

Explanation:

we can express momentum as,

momentum = mass \times velocity

Or  p = mv...(1)

Let,

m_{1} , m_{2}  and v_{1} , v_{2} be the mass  and velocity of the bullet and gun respectively

Given,

m_{1} = 0.06 kg

m_{2} = 5 kg

v_{1}   = 500 m/s

From equation (1),

The momentum of bullet = m_{1}v_{1}

The momentum of gun    = m_{2}v_{2}

According to the conservation of linear momentum, if there is no external force, the total momentum of the system will be conserved.

so here,

The momentum of the bullet = momentum of the gun

That is,

m_{1}v_{1} = m_{2}v_{2}

v_{2} = \frac{m_{1}v_{1}}{m_{2} }

substituting,

v_{2} = \frac{0.06\times500}{5 }

    = 60 m/s

Ans:

The recoil velocity of the gun = 60 m/s
