Given :

  • Mass of the bullet = 10 gm = 0.01 kg
  • Mass of the gun = 500 gm = 0.5 kg
  • Recoil velocity of the gun = - 20 m/s

To find :

  • The velocity of the bullet

Solution :

As no external force is acting on the system (bullet + gun ) the total momentum of the system remains conserved .

By applying law of conservation of momentum ,

Initial momentum of the system = Final momentum of the system

Initially the system (gun + bullet) is at rest . Hence , the initial momentum of the system will be zero .

Final momentum of the system = 0

\implies P_ g + P_ b = 0 \\ \\

\implies P_ b=  -  P_ g  \\ \\

\implies m \times u =  -  M \times V  \\ \\

\implies  u =  -\dfrac { M \times V } {m}\\ \\

Now let's substitute the values ,

\implies  u =  -\dfrac { 0.5 \times - 20 } {0.01 }\\ \\

\implies\boxed{u = 1000 \:m/s }

The velocity of the bullet is 1000 m/s .
