A bullet passes through a block kept on horizontal surface .It emerges out of the block with some speed and the block slides a little before coming to rest. The ground is not frictionless . Will the linear momentum be conserved here before and after collision? Why?

Momentum:-

it is the measure of amount of motion in a object

momentum =mass×velocity

  • dp/dt=F
  • means if the net forces acting on the object is zero then dp/dt is also zero that means change of momentum is constant
  • if the change is constant that means the final Momentum is equal to the initial momentum
  • internal forces do not change the momentum....bcz in the net external they get cancel out....

now lets go to your ques....

when bullet collides with the block they transfer the block a sudden impulse..which act as a internal force because the only forces acting are normal forces....

here as the net external force is 0 initially....and finally also..the momentum will be conserved in the block and bullet system...

if the centre of mass of block which is initial at rest....after colliding it moves to conserve the impulse provided by bullet...

Pinitial=Pfinal

m(bullet)v +M(block)0=m(bullet)v1 +M(block) v2

so to conserve the momentum the block will have some velocity...
