Speed of the bus from a to b = 40 km/h

It means, distance covered by the bus

= 40 km

And, time taken to cover the distance

= 1 hour

While returning, speed of the bus

= 15 km/h

It means, distance covered by the bus

= 15 km

And, Time taken to cover the distance

= 1 hour

Since, average speed

= total time taken/total distance cover

Hence, average speed = 40+15km/1+1h

= 55 km / 2 hour

= 27.5 km/h

Therefore, the average speed of the bus was 27.5 km/h.

Hope it helps.
