Given :

Distance travelled by the bus = 250 km

Time taken = 5 hrs

To find :

The average velocity for the bus

Solution

  • We know that

Average Velocity = Total displacement / Time taken

  • In this case the bus starts from Hyderabad and returns to Hyderabad,Where the displacement is Zero
  • As displacement is zero the average velocity of the bus becomes zero
  • Average Velocity = 0 m/s

The average velocity of the bus for the whole journey is 0 m/s

AVERAGE VELOCITY is ZERO km/h.

◆VELOCITY , depends on MAGNITUDE and DIRECTION.

◆Here, the bus velocity = distance travelled 250km / time

= 250/5 = 50km/h.

◆Velocity in coming back = -50km/h

[-ve ,Since OPPOSITE direction.]

◆Bus travelled in both directions , which are equal and opposite . That is ,

Average velocity = 50 + (-50) /2

=0 km/h

◆ While average speed is =( 50 + 50) /2 =50km/h. Speed doesn't depend on DIRECTION.
