Linear Equations in one variable

Given

A bus is carrying 50 passengers.

Cost of some tickets is Rs. 5.

Cost of some tickets is Rs. 10.

Total money received from passengers is Rs. 350.

To Find

Number of passengers with each type of ticket.

Solving

Let number of passengers with ticket of Rs. 5 be x.

Then, number of passengers with ticket of Rs. 10 will be ( 50 - x ). As, total number of passengers are 50.

Passengers with ticket of Rs. 5 will pay total money equivalent to 5x.

( Total Money = Price of Ticket * Number of passengers )

Similarly, passengers with ticket of Rs. 10 will pay total money equivalent to

10( 50 - x ).

Total money obtained = Rs. 350

5x + 10( 50 - x ) = 350

5x + 500 - 10x = 350

500 - 5x = 350

150 = 5x

30 = x

So, passengers with ticket of Rs. 5 are 30.

And passengers with ticket of Rs. 10 are

50 - x = 50 - 30 = 20

Answer

So, number of passengers with ticket of Rs. 5 are 30 and number of passengers with ticket of Rs. 10 are 20.

Verification

We can check whether total amount is Rs. 350 or not.

So, Left Hand Side of Equation formed

5x + 10( 50 - x )

5( 30 ) + 10( 50 - 30 )

150 + 10( 20 )

150 + 200

350

It is equal to Right Hand Side.

Hence, verified.
