Answer ⇒ 1.67 m/s².

Explanation ⇒ Given conditions,

Initial velocity of the bus = 18 km/hr. = 18 × 5/18 = 5 m/s.

Final velocity of the car = 0 m/s.

Change in velocity = Final velocity - initial velocity

∴ Change in velocity = 0 - 5 = -5 m/s.

Time in which the bus changes its velocity = 3 seconds.

Using the formula,

acceleration = change in velocity/time.

∴ acceleration = -5/3 m/s².

Now, we know that retardation = -acceleration.

∴ retardation = 5/3 m/s².  = 1.67 m/s².

Hope it helps.
