A bus is travelling at 54 km/h. the drive applies brakes so that it stops uniformly in 5 seconds. Find :
(a) Its acceleration
(b) Its retardation

Explanation:

54 kmph in mps = 15 m/s

Here,

[a] FINAL VELOCITY v =0

INITIAL VELOCITY u = 15 m/s

time =5s

According to first law of motion ,

v=u+at

0=15+a x 5

-15=5a

a=-3 m/s^2

[b] since acceleration = -ve retardation ,

retardation = 3m/s^2
