average speed = Total distance covered divided by total time taken to cover the distance.
Total distance covered by the bus from a to b and b to C = 100 + 200 that is 300 km.
time taken by bus from A to B = 100 / 40 = 10/4 Hour.
time taken by the bus from B to C = 200 / 40 =5 hours.
total time taken by bus from a to b and b to C = 10 / 4 + 5= 10 + 20 / 4 = 30 / 4 hour.
average speed = Total distance covered divided by total time taken to cover the distance.
average speed = 300 km /(30/4) hour.
that is 300 x 4 / 30 kilometre per hour.
so average speed = 40 km per hour.

so, average speed of bus throughout the entire trip is 40 km / hour.
