Given : A bus travelled the first half of its route at an average speed of 20 km hr.

average  speed for the entire trip was 24 km/hr,

To Find :  the average speed of the bus for the  second half its route.

Solution:

Distance = Speed x Time

Let say Total Distance = 2D km

First Half = 2D/2 = D km

Speed = 20 km/hr

Time =  D/20    hr

Second Half = 2D/2 = D km

Speed = X  km/hr

Time =  D/X   hr

Total Distance = 2D km

Speed = 24 km/hr

Time  = 2D/24 = D/12  hr

D/20  +  D/X  =  D/12

=> 1/20 + 1/X  = 1/12

Multiplying both sides by 60X

=> 3X + 60 = 5X

=>2X = 60

=> X = 30

average speed of the bus for the  second half its route. = 30 km/hr
