A bus travels a distance of 20 km from Chennai Central to Airport in 45 minutes. i) What is the average speed? ii) Why does the actual speed differ from the average speed?

1. avg speed (total dist./total time) which is 7.407 m/s
2. actual speed is the speed at that instant whereas average speed is the mean value of the speed over the entire journey

Formula for average speed= Total distance covered / Total time taken........... (1) 20km= 20000 m...... 45 min. = 45×60= 2700 s....... So, average speed= 20000/2700= 200/27= 7.407407 m/s or simply 7.407 m/s.. .........,............................................................................. (2) Actual speed is the speed you are traveling at any given moment at any given point but Average speed is the mean speed of that actual speed , it is the total distance divided by the total time taken. So it differs from the actual speed..
