let the total time be x

then the time after half an hour = x + 30

the time before half an hour = x - 30

speed = 36km/h and time = x + 30

distance = speed × time

distance = 36 × (x + 30)

distance = 36x + 1080

now,

speed = 42km/h and time = x - 30

distance = speed × time

distance = 42 × (x - 30)

distance = 42x - 1260

as the distance are same,

36x + 1080 = 42x - 126036

1080 + 1260 = 42x - 36x

2340 = 6x

2340/6 = x

390hours = x

distance = 36x + 1080

distance = 36 × 390 + 1080

distance = 14040 + 1080

distance = 15120km
