Average speed = total diatance/total time

v = d/t

t1 = d1/v1 = d1/4

t2 = d2/v2 = d2/6

Total distance D = d1 + d2

Total time = d1/4 + d2/6

But d1= d2 = D/2

Total time = d1/4 + d1/6 = 5d1/12

Substitute d1 = D/2

Total time = 5(D/2)/12 = 5D/24

Now to get the average speed

Average speed =total distance/total time

Average speed= D ÷ 5D/24

Average speed = D x 24/5D = 4.8m/s
