A bus travels with uniform velocity of 20 m/s for 5 s. The brakes are then applied and the bus is uniformly retarded and comes to rest in further 8 s. Draw a graph of velocity – time and find A. The distance travelled in first 5 s. B. The distance travelled after the brakes are applied. C. The total distance travelled. D. The acceleration during the first 5 s and last 8 s.

A ) distance covered in 5s=20×5

=100 meters

B) distance covered after applying breakes =20×8

=160 meters

C) total distance travelled = 100+160

= 260 meters

D) Acceleration = final velocity - starting velocity /time

starting velocity=20m/s

final velocity = According to the problem the car comes to rest in 8 second so the final velocity should be = 0

time =5 seconds

acceleration during Frist 5 seconds= 0-20/5=-4

so the acceleration is -4

------------------------------------------------------------------------

and now acceleration in 8 second

=0-20/8

acceleration = -2.5
