Question :- A butcher bought some pheasants for £100.00. had each cost £1 less, he would have bought 5 more. how many pheasants did he buy ?

Solution :-

Let us assume that, cost price od each pheasant is £x .

then,

→ In £100 he bought total pheasants = (100/x)

now,

→ New cost price = £(x - 1)

then,

→ In £100 he bought total pheasants = 100/x - 1)

A/q,

→ 100/(x - 1) - (100/x) = 5

→ {100x - 100(x - 1)} /x(x - 1) = 5

→ (100x - 100x + 100) = 5(x² - x)

→ 100 = 5(x² - x)

→ x² - x - 20 = 0

→ x² - 5x + 4x - 20 = 0

→ x(x - 5) + 4(x - 5) = 0

→ (x - 5)(x + 4) = 0

→ x = 5 or (-4)

since negative value of a pheasant is not possible.

therefore,

→ x = £5 .

hence,

→ Total pheasants he buy = 100/5 = 20 pheasants (Ans.)
