A cable breaks if stretched by more than 2 mm. It is cut into two equal parts. Now either part can be stretched by 1mm without breaking.

If you stretch a cable by 2 mm, all parts are stretching equally. Put a mark in the middle and you have 1 mm more on the left and 1 mm more on the right of that mark.
